I brought a battered old mobile for my US friend this April and went to an SFR shop to buy a SIM card. That cost 15 euros for the SIM, i.e. The phone number. The nice SFR man activated it in the shop, while I was there. If you recharge the card within periods of 6 months, you get to keep your phone number, if not: you loose it and must buy a new SIM.Then you go to a tabac or a postoffice and buy the 'talking time'. You can buy 'talking time' from 5 euros and up (10, 15, 20 etc.).You get a receipt with a free service telephone number to call and then the automatic voice will guide you through the procedures in French (basically it's about typing the code on the receipt, which then charges your account with the 'talking time').

If understanding French is an issue, I suggest you ask kindly in the tabac or postoffice, if they will help you do it.When your account runs low of 'talking time', you receive an SMS saying so. Then you just buy a new 'talking time' card of 5 euros etc.Really very easy, once you got the hang of it. You can also go to PhoneHouse, or Vodaphone shops to buy the SIM. Yes, each 'talking time' card/re-charge (what's the colloquial English term??) contains a certain number a minutes of talking and a certain number of SMS'es.My friend recharged the phone twice (1 x 5 euros, 1 x 10 euros) and she managed to call the US a couple of times - but that sucks up a good deal of the pre-payment of course. Now that I look at SFR's website it actually seems that you get an unlimited number of 'textos' (SMS'es)- but as my friend doesn't know how to send SMS'es, I wouldn't know for sure about that. Another advantage of the SFR La Carte is that you can nominate one number to which calls are charged at half the normal rate. This works well when there are two people in the 'group' as you can nominate each other's number.

I'm sure you could also make it work for a larger group. You can buy the pre-paid SFR sim card at any PhoneHouse store (there's usually English-speaking staff there) or an SFR strore (I believe you'll find English speaking staff in their shops also). You can find the closest store to where you'll be staying by going to their website and putting in the postal code of where you're staying (e.g. 75006).If you don't read French, Goggle translate does a good enough job.French sim cards will work in other European countries, but the call costs (both making and receiving) will be higher. (You don't pay to receive calls in ). When you buy your sim card, you should also ask about what you can do if you run out of credit in another country and need to recharge. With SFR you can purchase a Vodafone recharge coupon. Edited: 10:10 pm, July 31, 2010.
